2005 Buick Rendezvous CX

Buick broadens the model choice of its versatile Rendezvous crossover vehicle, which successfully blends the best attributes of a luxury sedan, SUV and minivan into one stylish, innovative package.

Following the successful introduction of the top-line, all-wheel-drive Rendezvous Ultra for 2004, Buick is further expanding the range for 2005 with a front-drive version of Ultra for customers in regions where AWD may be less of a necessity.

Also new for 2005 is the added availability of GM's 3.6L V-6 VVT (variable valve timing) engine in the front-drive Rendezvous CXL. This all-aluminum engine generates 242 horsepower (181 kw) while delivering 90 percent of its peak torque where it is most useful, between 1500 and 6000 rpm.

Rendezvous CX and CXL models have as standard a 3400 3.4L V-6 engine that produces 185 horsepower (138 kw). Fuel economy estimates are 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for the front-wheel-drive version, and 18/24 for the all-wheel-drive version.

Additional changes for 2005 include the availability of three new 17-inch wheel designs, and a touch-screen navigation function integrated into the available multimedia sound system. Three new color combinations are offered on CX and CXL, the primary colors being Cashmere Metallic, Cardinal Red Metallic and Platinum Metallic. Cappuccino Frost Metallic is offered as a new monotone color on Rendezvous Ultra.

Five-passenger seating is standard on the Rendezvous CX and CXL, with a two-passenger third-row bench seat available on both models. Two optional captain's chairs are available in lieu of the three-passenger second-row bench seat. The third-row bench seat comes with the captain's chairs.

Rendezvous Ultra

Now offered in front-wheel drive as well as all-wheel drive, Rendezvous Ultra is the most luxurious version of Buick's successful crossover vehicle. Its monochromatic exterior paint, color-keyed grille and tasteful chrome accents complement its elegant interior. Leather-appointed seats with premium suede fabric inserts are matched with woodgrain accents, wood-trimmed steering wheel and chrome touches on the instrument gauges and dials.

With seating for up to six, Rendezvous Ultra can be configured in a variety of ways to balance both passenger and cargo requirements. Both the first and second rows have individual captain's chairs, while the third-row bench also provides comfortable seating for two adults. With the third seat folded flush and the second row of seats removed, Rendezvous boasts a class-leading 108.9 cubic feet (3,084L) of cargo capacity.
New V-6 VVT engine

GM's all-aluminum 3.6L VVT global V-6 engine, coupled to the Hydra-Matic 4T65-E electronic four-speed automatic transmission, is now standard on the new front-wheel-drive Ultra and available on the FWD and all-wheel-drive CXL. (It was previously standard only on the all-wheel-drive Ultra and available on the AWD CXL.)

Using fully variable intake and exhaust valve timing, this global V-6 achieves outstanding flexibility under a wide range of driving conditions. Its VVT design also means more complete combustion, contributing to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Estimated fuel economy is 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway for FWD models, 18/25 for AWD.

The Rendezvous is available with GM's exclusive Versatrak all-wheel-drive system, which is lightweight, quiet and efficient. The on-demand system is one of the most advanced approaches to all-wheel drive. If one or both front wheels lose grip, the Versatrak system goes into action progressively, with no buttons to push or levers to throw. The system is poised to help drivers make use of the traction available by not only transferring torque from front to rear, but also from side to side between the rear wheels - an ability not found in many competitive systems.

An independent front suspension and innovative short-and-long-arm (SLA) rear suspension give Rendezvous the smooth ride of a premium sedan. An automatic level-control system, included in the trailer package, is available as an option. An on-board compressor regulates air bladder-assisted rear shock absorbers to maintain a level vehicle when heavy loads are carried or a trailer is attached. An auxiliary pressure outlet, rubber air hose and pressure gauge are provided in the rear for the convenient inflation of a tire, sports gear or beach toys. The available towing package is rated to pull loads of up to 3,500 pounds.

Safety and security features

Rendezvous comes with a full complement of safety and security features, including dual frontal air bags, safety cage construction, remote keyless entry, PASS-Key III theft deterrent system and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (AWD).

The Rendezvous has GM's Passenger Sensing System (PSS). PSS uses the latest sensing technology to turn the front passenger air bag on or off. If the sensor system detects an unoccupied front passenger seat or the presence of a smaller occupant, the front passenger air bag is designed to automatically turn off so it would not deploy in the event of a frontal collision. A status indicator on the instrument panel alerts occupants that the passenger air bag is on or off. Even with this system, GM strongly recommends placing child passengers in an appropriate child seat secured in the second or third row of the vehicle. Never install a rear-facing infant seat in front of an active air bag. GM also recommends that all children 12 and under ride in the rear seat when possible.

Side-impact air bags for front-seat occupants are available, as is Ultrasonic Rear Park Assist and GM's OnStar safety and security system.

OnStar-equipped Rendezvous models feature new sixth-generation hardware with digital and analog coverage. OnStar's Gen 6 hardware also includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the United States and Canada. Using the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Personal Calling, which allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls using a powerful three-watt digital/analog system and external antenna for greater reception.
